// 01 / THE BRIEF

A heritage theatre, an arena rider, Grand Prix Saturday.

Big Art Festival's first Singapore edition. The organiser brought the format, the headliner, the partners and the guest list. We made it legal, made it work in a 1930 theatre with no build day, and carried every local contract so the organiser paid one counterparty in one currency.

  1. 01 The room

    A theatre as a dinner room

    340 guests at round tables on the stalls floor, four courses around a live programme, a house rig designed for seated shows.

  2. 02 The rider

    A rider written for arenas

    74 lines. The venue had 16 of them. The rest — a second console, twelve wedges, six channels of Sennheiser 6000, the artist's own FOH system on a carnet — came from outside.

  3. 03 The date

    Grand Prix Saturday

    The busiest night of the Singapore calendar. Suppliers, riggers and wireless spectrum all spoken for.

The Capitol Theatre stalls floor set as a dinner room, 340 covers at round tables under the lighting rig.

// 02 / LICENSING

Eight approvals. One name on all of them.

Every licence sat with our Singapore entity. The organiser signed nothing with a Singapore agency, before the show or after it.

SOUND

The artist's FOH on a carnet. The house PA in the room.

The Waves LV1 system arrived on carnet and went into the venue’s d&b XSL. Monitors ran on the house DiGiCo SD9 through an isolated split. We hired and briefed the FOH engineer: the artist tours without one.

LIGHTING

House rig. Scene-by-scene brief.

32 house fixtures on grandMA2, two followspots on Clear-Com, two hazers, a mirror ball for the after-party. The brief came out of the show director’s walk-through: room black whenever the stage is live, colour drift through dinner, white only for the jewellery défilé.

VIDEO & LED

41 cues against the host's script.

A Resolume cue sheet built on the script: partner loop before doors, live Apple TV input for the giveaway, a media server added in show week, two screens for the host. Only two clips carried audio.

// 08 / WHAT WE LEARNT

Five things we took to the next edition.

  1. 01

    The date decides the sales.

    Grand Prix Saturday competes with the best free night of the year. Next time: Art Week in January or FinTech Festival week in November, on a Thursday.

  2. 02

    Sign the rider before the first quote.

    Seven revisions and a quarter more spend. A change mechanism for the artist's additions belongs in the contract.

  3. 03

    Ask the venue about IRATA at the site visit.

    We found out at 15:45 the day before a 02:00 load-in.

  4. 04

    Count receiver channels, not microphones.

    Ten transmitters on six channels looks like a complete quote. It is not.

  5. 05

    Build the structure before the content arrives.

    Video, soundtrack and screen content all landed in show week. The cue sheet and the lighting scenes were ready, so they slotted in.
